Joel McKerrow is a performance poet, writer, educator, youth worker, thinker and activist based out of Melbourne, Australia. He is the founder of ‘The Centre for Poetics and Justice’ (www.cpj.org.au), a not-for-profit, nationally recognised community arts organisation focused on using poetics as a form of literary education, self-expression and social engagement. He was a feature poet on the National Global Poetics 2011 tour of Australia performing alongside Ken Arkind, Mahogany Brown, Jive Poetic and Shane Koyczan and the 2012 Please Resist Me Tour of Australia performing alongside Australian National Poetry Slam Champion Luka Lesson. He has been a Victorian state finalist for the Australian Poetry slam in both 2010 and 2011 and his words can also be found on the pages of his book Beyond Rhetoric – Writings in the Tradition of Kahlil Gibran (published by UNOH publishing with foreword by Richard Rohr) and in his debut spoken word album- ‘One Foot in the Clay’. With a passionate performance style he has been commended by Canadian performance poet Virtuoso, Shane Koyczan as, ‘an exceptional spoken word artist…fiercely political and humane’ and by the Australian National Poetry Slam Champion, Luka Lesson, as, ‘a true leader in Australia's performance poetry scene…A man who can tear a roof down with his performances and bring tears with his subtle eloquence’. Vocationally, he has been an educator for the last five years on Faculty at Tabor College Victoria and has been a youth worker for the last 10 years, working with marginalised teenagers in a broad range of organisations in both New South Wales and Victoria. He has a B.A. (Psych), B.Th. (Theology), Cert. IV TAA (Training and Assessment) and M.A. (Vocational Practice). He is passionate about discovering a new way to live outside the system of the Empire of Greed and spends much of his time trying to match his actions with this belief. Joel is currently touring around the world as part of the 'One Foot in the Clay' launch tour and the 2012 Soles of Australia tour within Canada.
